綠洲,予人盼望,是人乾渴中可以得著滋潤的地方,是人在絕境中尋覓之地。聖經中有不少綠洲之地,是我們所知悉又或是所未了解的,但卻都在乾旱枯燥的道途中,成了人豐盛盼望之地。走在「聖經中綠洲」的靈訓中,可以讓我們領受靈裡豐盛的真理,更可為心存委身意志的人建立這讓人在乾渴之地得著滋潤並走進豐盛的異象。

5. Did Esther trap herself inside a bell jar or she was placed there by the societal pressures of her day?
Introduction
On February 11, 1963 , at about 9 in the morning, on 23 Ftzroy Road , an unmistakable smell was oozing out from her house. Under all the doors in her house were towels and cloths. Some children were crying helplessly in their upstairs bedroom. By the high-sided cots were bread and milk prepared for the children. And in the kitchen, all the gas taps were on, and the controversial Sylvia Plath was sprawling on the floor, dead. (Stevenson 296)
On April 15, 2000 , William Cash, on the heel of the publication of The Journals of Sylvia Plath in London , commented “[the publication of the journals had] once again had the literary world asking the question: what or who killed Sylvia Plath?” (An Icon Condemned in Her Own Words) This implies that the debate over the meticulously planned suicide of Plath has been as long-running as more than 30 years, and literati have not yet seemed tired of it.
Another book that reflects Plath’s life is her only novel – The Bell Jar. This autobiographical novel, set in New York in the 1950s, unfolds with Esther Greenwood, a reflection of Plath, on winning a fashion magazine writing contest, coming to the cosmopolitan city to work for Ladies’ Day, a fashion magazine, under Jay Cee, who is a demanding yet caring editor. Despite being extremely intelligent, Esther, once a top student at college, feels uncertain about her future career. And the Vanity Fair in New York makes her feel unable to fit into the party-going and boyfriend-hunting lifestyle, which her colleague, Doreen, seems intensely keen on. Worse still, she is nearly raped by Marco on a blind date on her last night in New York .
Wanting to enroll in a writing course, Esther takes a train back home, only to discover her application has been rejected. Not long after getting home, she starts to find her ability to read and write declining. She also suffers from chronic insomnia. Later on, she even attempts suicide by hanging herself, drowning herself and poisoning herself. Fortunate enough, though, her attempts fail. All these experiences the narrator deems as being stifled and distorted in the bell jar (Plath 230).
If literary scholars have been interested in joining a heated discussion over the question “what or who killed Sylvia Plath” for more than 3 decades, then with respect to Esther’s life, a reflection of Plath’s, the question worth no less attention should be whether Esther has trapped herself inside a “bell jar” or she has been placed there by the societal pressures of her day. That hinges on a significant and interesting question: “Has Esther trapped herself inside a ‘bell jar’ or has she been placed there by the societal pressures of her day?”
But before answering the question, one has to know what the bell jar refers to in order that the discussion can continue. So, what is the “bell jar”? The “bell jar” is a metaphor Sylvia Plath has devised to illustrate Esther Greenwood’s failure to understand the outside world and her failure to make herself understood to the outside world. As any living things placed inside the transparent glass vessel, Esther can see the outside world, but cannot smell or hear it. Nor can the outside world get in touch with her. Also, the stifling conditions inside the bell jar can serve to stand for the depression that her isolation from the outside world brings her. In short, the experience in the “bell jar” is Esther’s plunge into the abyss of nervous breakdown. And the implication is that if one is asking what has trapped Esther in the Bell Jar, one is also asking what has caused Esther’s nervous breakdown and suicidal attempts.
In this essay, I will argue that it is not really a case of either Esther herself or societal pressures, rather it is Esther’s character weaknesses, personal experiences and societal pressures that have trapped her in the bell jar, or in other words, caused her to suffer psychiatrically and attempt to make away with herself.
